The internet reacts to Taylor Swift name-checking Charlie Puth on ‘The Tortured Poets Department’

"Taylor has spoken the truth and I applaud her"

Taylor Swift fans have been reacting after she gave Charlie Puth a shout out on her new album ‘The Tortured Poets Department: The Anthology’.

On the album’s title track, the singer declares: “You smoked then ate seven bars of chocolate / We declared Charlie Puth should be a bigger artist.”

In the past, the singer-songwriter has declared his admiration for Swift, often covering her songs during his shows. “This is why she’s such a genius, man,” he said while performing her early hit ‘Teardrops On My Guitar’ in 2021 (via People).

That same year Puth also welcomed Swift to TikTok before she responded: “I’ve lurked your account for ages! Thanks for the welcome, piano prince.”

Her latest shout out has seen many fans reacting on X with one writing: “If anything comes from TTPD, I hope it’s a Charlie Puth resurgence.”

Another added: “We declared Charlie Puth should be a bigger artist, Taylor has spoken the truth and I applaud her.”

One user also wrote: “We declared Charlie Puth should be a bigger artist is truly the last thing I thought I’d ever hear Taylor Swift sing in a Taylor Swift song.

Other fans posted gifs of Puth’s likely reaction to the name-check.

The star’s 11th studio album arrived today (April 19) and this morning Swift announced it is in fact a double album and she shared the remaining tracks.

She also shared the trailer for her upcoming ‘Fortnight’ music video, which will star Post Malone.

Fans also took to social media to suggest that the record is about The 1975‘s Matty Healy. The pair were romantically linked for a short period time in 2023.

Elsewhere, those that purchased the album physically are opening the record to poems from both Swift and Fleetwood Mac frontwoman Stevie Nicks.

Reviewing the record, NME awarded it three stars and described it as a “rare misstep” for Swift. It added: “Arriving at the peak of her imperial phase, Swift’s 11th studio album is surprisingly flat and, at times, cringeworthy.”

Following the LP’s release, Swift will resume her career-spanning ‘Eras Tour’ in Europe next month before heading to the UK and Ireland in June. Swift is due to play eight shows at Wembley Stadium in London this summer as part of the run, with support coming from Paramore.
