During Blur’s pre-Coachella warm-up gig at the Fox Theater Pomona in California on April 10, frontman Damon Albarn spoke of several instances of Americans trying to claim songwriting credits for their hit track ‘Song 2’.
Albarn said onstage: “Because of the nature of American law, if someone gets a lawyer… they can come quite a long way with absolutely no grounds. Someone else this year – not only is it that person who’s convinced they’d written it, but there was another person who was convinced. Firstly, I wonder why it’s only that song that they’re interested in.”
A clip of the speech was recorded and shared on X (formerly Twitter) by a Damon Albarn fanpage. Liam Gallagher responded to the post, writing: “Gotta be out of your box to claim to have written that song absolute TURDOS”.

Gallagher’s response resulted in an exchange with another user on the platform, who told the Oasis icon that ‘Song 2’ is “better than any song you wrote Liam”. Gallagher said in a two-part post: “I could write that standing on my head you spunkbubble,” and “It’s music for posh brats”.

However, Liam Gallagher also gave Blur their flowers when the Damon Albarn fanpage account asked him which Blur song he would’ve liked to have written. Gallagher simply replied: ‘Sing’. The fanpage followed up, asking if ‘Sing’ has ever made the Oasis singer cry, to which Gallagher said: “Like a baby.”

Elsewhere during their April 10 gig in California, Blur rolled out the hits to warm them up for their Coachella set on April 13. Besides ‘Song 2’, Blur performed hits such as ‘Parklife’, ‘Beetlebum’, ‘Death of a Party’, ‘Girls And Boys’, ‘Tender’ and many more. See footage from the gig here.
The intimate gig marked one of their first US shows in almost a decade, having last played in New York back in 2015. Saturday’s festival set will also mark their return to Coachella after an 11-year absence.
In other Blur news, it was recently revealed that the Britpop icons are set to release a new documentary and concert film charting their huge 2023 reunion. The projects will document the recording and release of their first album in eight years, ‘The Ballad Of Darren’, as well as the huge shows that followed – including the two headline shows at Wembley Stadium in London last summer.
On the Liam Gallagher front, he recently defended the length of his gigs on the recent tour with John Squire, after being criticised by some fans for their headline sets running for less than an hour.
It came after Gallagher and Squire released a collaborative album in February, which received a four-star review from NME. “It’s hard to imagine anyone feeling short-changed by the album itself. Obviously this isn’t a ‘Definitely Maybe’ or ‘The Stone Roses’ – no-one could touch those hook-laden masterpieces,” it read. “As a triumph of style and mood, though, ‘Liam Gallagher John Squire’ is well worthy of their enduring legacies.”
