Melissa Auf Der Maur has teased that a Hole reunion could be on the horizon, revealing that members of the band have recently met up and that she’s eager to reclaim their “glory”.
The musician played bass in the Courtney Love-led band between 1994 and 1999, and sparked excitement among fans last year when she spoke of their “unfinished business“. Now, she’s further added to the speculation that Hole’s story may not yet be over by saying that she’d “genuinely love to” reform the group.
“I was in Los Angeles two weeks ago and had breakfast with Eric [Erlandson, guiratist], coffee with Courtney and dinner with Patty [Schemel, drummer],” she said in a translation from the new issue of German magazine, Visions. “I told them of our first encounter at the airport in Seattle and the feelings I had after our tribute event [for Courtney Love at Basilica Hudson last year].
“We’re older, we’re mellow. I feel this would be the moment to do it. We did a few little gigs over the years but nothing substantial, which by the way I am quite happy about to be honest.”
Auf Der Maur admitted that reunions are “a weird thing”, but felt that enough time had passed since their split to celebrate Hole.
“Now it’s been exactly 20 years since I’ve left the band, and I want a piece of our glory back,” she continued. “Hole was a very good band, and I want to let everybody know it’s important that women in rock music also get remembered, even if they were in the shadow of their husband.”

She added: “And even though [Kurt Cobain] may have been the biggest rock hero of the ’90, I still think that Courtney is due more respect. I know she’s not been in music much in the past since then, but those three records of hers, you know, from punk to the red carpet, from ‘Pretty On The Inside’ to ‘Top 40’, it’s a fascinating career.
“It was short, but it’s one of the most remarkable careers of any woman in rock, so I hope she gets her respect. I was happy to be a part of it.”
Honouring Love ahead of the New York tribute event last year, Auf Der Maur hailed her as a “misunderstood wild card“. The evening also saw the pair reunite to perform a number of Hole songs together.
“Courtney deserves a creative bouquet of honouring,” she said. She’s one of the most misunderstood, wild card, strange individuals, and Hole’s legacy is important to me, as far as it being looked at with the respect it deserves and the impact it made. The impact is very real. The #MeToo moments, Courtney was always saying this stuff.”
The bassist also recently paid tribute to the current Smashing Pumpkins line-up, having played with the band during their ‘Machina’ era in 2000.
Earlier this year, Love made headlines when she slammed the Bikini Kill reunion as “the biggest hoax in the history of rock n’ roll“.
