The Spice Girls have altered the lyrics to their 1996 single ‘2 Become 1’ in order to make it more LGBTQI-friendly.
Revealing the news in an interview with Gay Times, Emma Bunton said that she and the rest of the band made the decision to change a line in the single – which spent three weeks at Number One upon its release – so that it was made more inclusive.
Changing the lyrics, “any deal that we endeavour/boys and girls feel good together” to, “once again if we endeavour/love will bring us back together”, Bunton explained that herself, Geri Horner, Mel C, and Mel B made the decision whilst on the road. “We changed the lyrics in a hotel,” she said. “We were travelling and we were like, ‘Absolutely, it needs to be changed.’ We felt like it needed to be more inclusive.”
Bunton also discussed how thankful the band are for their LGBTQI+ fans. “You notice that support – it’s just incredible,” she said. “Thank goodness we’re living at a time where everyone is supporting each other so much more now. I feel so thankful to them – when I write or when I perform, it feels on such a more open, different level. It’s so much more inclusive and special.”
Last year, the Spice Girls announced their return with a 2019 UK stadium tour. Sharing the news via Twitter, a video was published that saw Geri Horner, Mel B, Emma Bunton, and Mel C delivering a mock news bulletin.
