The publication today of the first ever image of a black hole has had Muse frontman Matt Bellamy and his fans in fine form on social media – see a selection of their responses to the major scientific news below.
Astronomers have today (April 10) released an image they took of one black hole, which is located in the M87 galaxy (located over 500 million trillion KM away) and measures 40 billion KM across – roughly three million times the size of Earth.
“It has a mass 6.5 billion times that of the Sun,” Radboud University in the Netherlands’ Prof Heino Falcke, who proposed the experiment, told the BBC. “And it is one of the heaviest black holes that we think exists. It is an absolute monster, the heavyweight champion of black holes in the Universe.”
Naturally, Muse fans were quick to jump on this astronomical breakthrough by linking the picture with the title of the band’s third album ‘Black Holes and Revelations’ and its lead single ‘Supermassive Black Hole’ – both of which came out in 2006.

Earlier this week, Muse performed the new Bellamy-written track ‘Pray’ during one of their live shows – the song has been written for a forthcoming compilation album which has been inspired by Game of Thrones ahead of the launch of the show’s final season.
