Tom DeLonge left Blink 182 “to change the world for my kids”

The founding member of the California band quit in 2015

Tom DeLonge has opened up further about the reasons behind his departure from Blink-182, stating that his motivation for quitting was fuelled by a desire to benefit humanity and help “change the world for my kids and everybody else’s”.

DeLonge co-founded Blink with bassist Mark Hoppus in 1992, and he quit the band in 2015 – four years on from the release of ‘Neighborhoods’, the last Blink album he worked on. Matt Skiba replaced DeLonge as lead guitarist shortly afterwards.

DeLonge has now spoken in a new interview with his organisation To The Stars Academy of Arts & Science, which he co-founded in 2015 with the aim of “disrupting the status quo” in order to “reach transformative discoveries within our reach that will revolutionise the human experience”.

“The last show I played was in front of 100,000 people,” DeLonge says in the interview, which you can see below. “And then they wonder why I’m not doing that now and I’ll say because this is the one moment in my life where I’ll be able to look back as an old man and say, ‘Oh my god, I was a part of the team that changed the world.’”

Hailing the assembly of To The Stars Academy’s “team of the most experienced, connected and passionately curious minds from the U.S. intelligence community,” DeLonge also explained more about his grand aim to “change the path that humanity is on” – and how that drive was a major force in his decision to quit Blink.

“I wanted to make a quick message to let you know that, from the heart, I left my band and all that I was known for because this is the moment in time where I can change the world for my kids and everybody else’s,” he said.

“I would love for you to consider doing that with us.”
