A popular London pub that features in the lyrics of The Clash‘s ‘Stay Free’ will reportedly call last orders for the final time later this month.
The Crown & Sceptre in Streatham, South London, will shut its doors on February 24, reports Brixton Buzz.
The watering hole is believed to date back to 1825 and was given the thumbs up on the Clash track from 1978, which features on their second album ‘Give ‘Em Enough Rope.’
“I practiced daily in my room, you were down the crown planning your next move,” guitarist Mick Jones sings on the track.
Writing on the Brixton Buzz forum, one user said: “Confirmed by bar staff tonight that the pub closes this Sunday 24. Sounds like its going out with a whimper too – no wake planned.
“Its demise is a great blow for those of a certain age with a certain income level …”

Lambeth Liberal Democrats also took to Twitter to share their sadness.
“Shame to hear confirmation from Brixton Buzz that Streatham’s Crown and Sceptre is closing,” they wrote. “Losing a local institution is always a blow to regulars but especially given the history and prime location of the pub.”

Although the closure is yet to be confirmed, the pub is operated by JD Wetherspoon who have been contacted for comment by NME.
