The Cure tease more shows to celebrate 30th anniversary of ‘Disintegration’

They have a very busy 2019.

The Cure have announced four live shows at the Sydney Opera House in May to mark the 30th anniversary of their classic album, ‘Disintegration’.

The legendary post-punkers will play the 1989 album in full at the iconic Australian arts venue, teasing that it will be the “world premiere of these performances” and suggesting that more will follow across the world afterwards.

‘Disintegration’ features some of the band’s best-known material including ‘Lovesong’, ‘Pictures Of You’, and ‘Lullaby’.

Vivid LIVE is hosting the British band on May 24, 25, 27, 28 2019 for the Australia shows.

Meanwhile, over the weekend (March 30) frontman Robert Smith said that taking the anniversary shows stateside is “inevitable”. He added that the band would plan to play the US towards the end of 2019.

Speaking to Rolling Stone, Smith said: “It’s inevitable, I think. When we did the last festival, I said, ‘This is it.’ But once we’ve rehearsed it, I know it’s going to be really good. We’re holding home theaters in New York and Los Angeles. But I kind of feel like we should do it in a bigger venue. I’d like to a big show with it, really.

“It’s a bigger album. I think when we did the first three albums we did three nights at the Beacon in New York. It was much more punky. We were trying to recreate that vibe. But I think ‘Disintegration’ is just big. So we need to do somewhere that’s just big. But probably about Christmas time we’ll come back.”

In December 2018 Smith confirmed that the goth icons are about to finish their first album in a decade.

After previously revealing that the band were working on new material, Smith said that the honour of being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame had inspired them to finish their first record since 2008’s ‘4: 13 Dream.’

The Cure are playing dozens of festivals this year. Take a look at the full list here. The band were recently confirmed to headline this year’s Glastonbury festival along with The Killers and Stormzy.

When asked about the prospect last year, Smith said: “Yeah, maybe. We haven’t had a happy history with Glastonbury over the years. Although we’ve headlined three times, we’ve never been on the best of terms.”
