BET apologises after Twitter diss forces Nicki Minaj to pull out of BET Awards shows

BET mentioned Minaj when reporting Cardi's Grammy win

The BET network has apologised, after Nicki Minaj cancelled her appearance at a show this summer when the network mentioned her in a tweet about Cardi B’s Grammy win.

In a caption accompanying a piece on the ‘Bodak Yellow’ rapper winning Best Rap Album for ‘Invasion Of Privacy’, BET wrote: “Meanwhile, Nicki Minaj is being dragged by her lacefront.” The tweet has since been deleted.

Minaj retweeted a fan who posted a screenshot of the offending comment and, in a separate tweet, announced her label Young Money would “no longer be a part of the BET Experience or award show.” She also promised a new series of summer tour dates would be “dropping soon.”

Now, BET has apologised and insisted that the comments should never have been made in the first place.

“BET loves Nicki Minaj. We have supported her from the very beginning of her career and will continue to do so moving forward. Nicki has paved the way for so many performers and has solidified her place as one of the most powerful figures in the music industry”, the network wrote.

“Unfortunately, the respect we have for Nicki was violated by this post that should never have been written. The post does not reflect how we feel about Nicki. And further does not reflect our company values. We deeply apologize for the hurt, disappointment and confusion that this post has caused. We are committed to doing everything we can to address the situation.

“We are also conducting an internal audit to assure these types of posts are not published again. We have apologized to Nicki and her team. The post has been removed and we have taken additional appropriate action. We understand Nicki’s position and look forward to continuing our dialogue with her.

“Finally, we apologize to all of her fans. This should have never happened.”

The rapper’s labelmate Lil Wayne was also due to perform at a BET Experience concert, which take place between June 20-22. The BET Awards are on June 23.

Minaj and Cardi were involved in a series of fights last year, with the most infamous coming at a New York Fashion Week event in September. Cardi was photographed leaving the party early with a lump on her head after the pair’s beef got physical.

Both stars later told their followers they would not be fighting on social media anymore, with Cardi saying: “If you really wanna talk about it, you know where to link me.” Minaj responded: “I know this stuff is entertaining & funny to a lot of people but I won’t be discussing this nonsense anymore.”

Cardi’s Best Rap Album win at last night’s (February 10) Grammys made her the first solo woman to win in that category. She also performed at the ceremony, playing a version of her latest single, ‘Money’.
