Greta Van Fleet have said that The Black Keys need to step up their game otherwise they could just be seen as “some band”.
Bassist Sam Kiszka said in a new interview with HEAVY that competition is on for them whenever Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney return with the follow-up to 2014’s ‘Turn Blue’.
“They haven’t done a record in a long time, [so] at this point it’s going to decide whether they are some band, or a very serious staple rock band that shows and represents the rock and roll of the early 21st century.”
Kiszka drew a seemingly unprompted comparison between the pressure his own band faces for the follow-up to their debut, ‘Anthem of the Peaceful Army’, and the much-anticipated ninth record from The Black Keys.
He said: “I think that if you think about it too much, then it becomes unnatural, and it’s very easy to be caught up in that. So, yeah, I think we’re just gonna do what we do, and we’re gonna make the music that we wanna hear, and we’re gonna grow musically.”

Elsewhere in the interview Kiszka said that Greta Van Fleet’s next album will be “very worldly”.
“Touring the world — seeing Japan, seeing Australia — and having all these new experiences, in a way, those sounds of…the colours of our mind get put into the record like that. This only skyrockets our creativity, because we get to see so many beautiful things that we’ve never seen before,” he said.

The Black Keys haven’t released any material since 2014, however, the bandmembers have been busy with other projects.
Drummer Carney produced a track on the latest album by Karen Elson’s, the ex-wife of Keys’ longtime rival Jack White.
Guitarist/vocalist Auerbach produced Cage The Elephant’s‘ ‘Tell Me I’m Pretty’ in 2015 and has also released albums as The Arcs and under his own name.
