DMX has been released from prison.
The New York rapper, real name Earl Simmons, was sentenced to one year in prison back in March 2018 after previously pleading guilty to federal tax evasion charges in November 2017. He was initially arrested after New York federal prosecutors said he was behind a multi-year scheme to hide millions in income from the IRS, avoiding $1.7 million in existing tax liabilities.
Having first entered prison in January 2018 following a bail violation, DMX has today (January 25) been released from the Gilmer Federal Correctional Institution in Glenville, West Virginia. A spokesperson for the Federal Bureau of Prisons confirmed the rapper’s release to CNN.
Vulture first reported about DMX’s release yesterday (January 24), citing his lawyer Murray Richman. According to the publication, while the rapper’s release from Gilmer Federal Correctional Institution is officially listed as being on Sunday (January 27), the Federal Bureau of Prisons has a policy to release inmates on the last weekday before the stated date if it happens to fall on a weekend – hence why he was released today.
The rapper will now reportedly be under supervised release for three years.
