The Killers have returned with a stand alone anti-Trump anthem ‘Land Of The Free’ and new a video directed by Spike Lee.

The Las Vegas band took to their social media accounts yesterday (January 13) to “tease something new” and earlier made their one off track available via streaming services which you can listen to below.

Recorded at their own Battle Born Studios and produced by Jacknife Lee, with additional gospel vocals by (vocal co-arranger) Lynn Mabry, Dorian Holley, Will Wheaton, Sherree Patrice Brown, Akasha Mabry and Killers’ touring vocalists Amanda Brown, Danielle René Withers and Erica Canales, the song, is a heartfelt lament inspired by current events under Donald Trump’s administration and past events in the US.

Now they have unveiled a new video from Spike Lee featuring dramatic footage of migrants at the Mexico border, which you can watch below.

The band gave Lee full creative rein, and he filmed the video over a few weeks at the tail end of 2018, travelling to the U.S./Mexico border to capture scenes of migrants’ families as they made their way towards the US.

Speaking about the track frontman Brandon Flowers said on Beats 1’s Instagram page: “I think it’s a very important time right now and enough was enough is basically where it comes from.

“It started in my mind, around when [the] Sandy Hook [shooting] happened and as a father how that affected me and then it just started stacking up. It was things like Eric Garner, Trayvon Martin, things like what’s happening at [the Mexico border] wall. This stuff didn’t seem to be in harmony with the values that I believe my country was founded on.”

He added: “I would start the song and then I would put it away and say ‘I’m not the guy to do this. I feel inadequate, someone is gonna write this song’ and then it just piled up with Las Vegas, Orlando, Parkland [shootings]. It just kept coming and I just thought , ‘I have to get this out’.”

Flowers also issued a lengthy statement on Twitter backing up his comments on Beats 1 which you can read below.

Meanwhile, The Killers’ guitarist Dave Keuning is preparing to release his debut solo album, ‘Prisism’, on January 25.

In a recent interview with The Times, Keuning says his solo album is born out of frustration after his ideas for songs were placed at “the bottom of the pile” by the band.
