Kate Bush has issued a rare statement on her political stance, saying that a quote in which she called Theresa May “wonderful” was taken “out of context”.
Back in 2016, the iconic ‘Hounds of Love’ artist was reported to have voiced her support for the current Prime Minister. In a discussion with Canada’s Maclean’s, the musician was asked about Hillary Clinton’s US election defeat to Donald Trump, saying in response that it felt “great” to have a female leader in the UK.
“We have a female Prime Minister here in the UK,” she said. “I actually really like [May] and think she’s wonderful.”

Now, the singer has offered clarification on her comments via her official website. In the post, she says that she is not a supporter of the Tory party – claiming that her words in 2016 were used “out of context”, which “was deeply frustrating”.
After saying that she has “avoided making political comments” to the press over her long career, Bush explained: “My response to the interviewer was not meant to be political but rather was in the defence of women in power. I felt he was putting a really negative slant on powerful women, referring to a witch hunt involving Hilary Clinton.
“In response I said that we had a woman in charge of our country, and that I felt it was a good thing to have women in power.”

Bush continued: “I should have been clearer when I then said it was the best thing that had happened to us for a long time – because I greatly disliked the behaviour of the previous PM, who at that point I felt had abandoned us and everybody felt angry and let down.
“Again with no response from me to the latest resurfacing of this article, it could make it seem like I am a Tory supporter which I want to make clear I am not.”
Bush concluded by saying that she “won’t be commenting further on this, but feel it’s become so pervasive that I felt I needed to clarify this matter once and for all.”
Last month, a Kate Bush pop-up shop appeared in London. The store, which was situated at Coals Drop Yard in Kings Cross, sold her recently released lyric book How To Be Invisible as well as the newly remastered versions of her music catalogue on vinyl and CD.
