New trailer drops for ‘Lords Of Chaos’, the Mayhem biopic starring Sky Ferreira and Rory Culkin

It's about to get very, very dark...

The band’s live performances attracted notoriety, and tragedy struck the band in 1991 when vocalist Per Yngve Ohlin (“Dead”) took his own life, before guitarist a Øystein Aarseth (“Euronymous”) was murdered by former member Varg Vikernes (“Count Grishnackh”) of Burzum.

After premiering at Sundance, a new short teaser trailer has arrived showing the early days of Mayhem and Burzum, and a young Euronymous (Rory Culkin).

The film currently has a rating of 92% of Rotten Tomatoes, with Variety hailing it as “tremendous fun”.

“Caveat: one must be able to handle severed pig heads, cat torture, and casual Nazism,” Variety added. “Åkerlund’s music videos established him as a whiz-bang technician, a skill he only unleashes in two terrifying montages. Lords of Chaos proves that he can also get great performances out of a young cast, especially Kilmer’s otherworldly Dead.”

Decibel meanwhile concluded: “Åkerlund’s most impressive feat comes in making the film accessible to both metalheads and normies. By limiting the amount of actual black metal in the film, bringing in a lot of humor, and eschewing strict adherence to events in exchange for the most satisfying narrative, he strikes a really tricky balance. It’s not perfect — some of the supporting characters don’t feel as fleshed out as they could, and since they’re a bunch of skinny white dudes wearing black, a lot of them kinda blend together.

“Right now the film has a poor rating on IMDb, which I suspect comes from Varg siccing his army of internet Nazi shut-ins on the film. Don’t fall for the fake hype. This is the real deal.”
