Elton John reaches out to the real John Lewis after years of Twitter hounding

Don't @johnlewis

A man who shares the same name with the John Lewis department store got a special shout out from Sir Elton John.

John Lewis, whose Twitter handle is @johnlewis, is flooded with messages each time the store’s Christmas advert is released. At first these tweets were born out of confusion, mistaking him as the retailer, but now in recent years it’s become something of a running joke with Mr Lewis.

This year, the department store’s festive advert features Sir Elton singing ‘Your Song’, which was reprised by Ellie Goulding for the shop’s offering eight years ago, and includes flashbacks to his longstanding musical career.

The actual John Lewis, who is a computer science educator from the US, has been on the receiving end of the Rocketman’s Twitter after he shared his thoughts on the new feature.

“The only thing I contributed to this ad was to buy every Elton John album throughout my life,” Mr Lewis tweeted the store, which goes by the less obvious handle of @jlandpartners.

Sir Elton’s team messaged him back, writing: “Thanks for being a fan, John. We love your work too! – Team EJ  ”

Mr Lewis has become known for his witty comebacks in relation to the Twitter handle mix-up.

One person Tweeted asked him yesterday (November 16): “You have such a strong personal brand. Have you considered maybe opening a store to sell merchandise bearing your name?” to which he replied, “But what would I call it?”

Elsewhere, Elton John recently announced details of new UK dates for his ‘Farewell Yellow Brick Road’ tour.
