But the former Smiths frontman has since issued a statement in which he criticises TMZ for circulating what he calls false reports.

The statement reads: “The only trouble at San Diego were the fictitious reports by TMZ that I had been attacked. This is absolute crap. The concert and the crowd were a dream night for me. I was honored and grateful for such an excited and loving response. It concluded an outstanding set of U.S dates and I am absolutely thrilled.

“TMZ, alas, live exclusively in a world of their own, and certain sections of the press seem enraged that there is nothing negative to report.”

In the video, Morrissey is seen reaching out to the other people who come on stage while security staff struggle to maintain them.

Nevertheless, the musician did not return to finish his set at the Copley Symphony Hall, while the apparent assailant was removed in a chokehold by security.

He wore one of his own tour T-shirts for the performance, while his backing band wore matching T-shirts bearing the slogan “Living bodies that actually move”. It’s a T-shirt Morrissey’s band has occasionally worn in concert before.

Morrisey had announced last month that a studio cover of The Pretenders’ song would be included on an expanded reissue of last year’s album ‘Low In High School’.

A video for the song features Morrissey playing guitar for the first time – Morrissey had previously stated he preferred not to play guitar, as it gave him better freedom of movement on stage in concert.
