Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong has praised Vince Staples for his new album artwork, which appears to pay homage to the cover of the band’s 1994 LP ‘Dookie’.
North Long Beach rapper Staples released his third studio album ‘FM!’ last week, which features guest appearances from the likes of Earl Sweatshirt, Tyga and Kehlani.
The artwork for ‘FM!’ – which depicts the album title surging out of the sea to create a tidal wave that’s headed towards a beach filled with an array of zany characters – was designed by the Japanese artist Verdy, and it appears to have been influenced by Richie Bucher’s similarly well-populated artwork for ‘Dookie’.
Armstrong noted the similarity and registered his approval of the apparent homage on Instagram last night (November 5), posting both album covers together and commenting “I love this.” See the post below.
In other recent Green Day news, Smashing Pumpkins’ Billy Corgan hailed the band’s hugely successful 2004 record ‘American Idiot’ as being the last “guitar-driven music to reach the masses”.
Affirming that Armstrong is “up there with the greats,” Corgan declared that ‘American Idiot’ was one of the last guitar albums to make a significant cultural impact.

The legacy of ‘American Idiot’ is set to continue over the next few years, with a musical based on the album set to hit the UK next year and an HBO movie in the works.
