The script for the failed ‘Xena’ reboot has leaked online

A Facebook group campaigned for its release

A script for the failed reboot of Xena, Warrior Princess has emerged online.

Xena Movie Campaign, a Facebook fan group, released the script for the show online with the support of the script’s writer, Javier Grillo-Marxuach. In 2015, it was announced that NBC were working on a reboot of the original series, which ran from 1995 to 2001.

The script was for the unreleased pilot episode of the show and you can read it here:

Planned originally for a 2016 release, the script retells an origin story for Xena. The reboot planned to change some of the original character arcs, most notably turning Hercules into a villain. It also reportedly explored a romantic storyline between Xena and her sidekick Gabrielle.

Speaking about the reboot in 2016, Grillo-Marxuach – who also wrote the script for Lost – spoke about the direction he saw the show progressing in. “Xena will be a very different show made for very different reasons,” he said. “There is no reason to bring back Xena if it is not there for the purpose of fully exploring a relationship that could only be shown subtextually in first-run syndication in the 1990s.”

“It will also express my view of the world – which is only further informed by what is happening right now – and is not too difficult to know what that is if you do some digging,” Grillo-Marxuach added.

Last year, NBC president Jennifer Salke said that the plans to reboot Xena with a new lead actress had been scrapped indefinitely.

Salke said: “Nothing is happening on that right now…we looked at some material; we decided at that point that it didn’t warrant the reboot. I’d never say never on that one because it’s such a beloved title, but the current incarnation of it is dead.”
