Watch Charli XCX and Troye Sivan throwback to the 90s with ‘Titanic,’ Spice Girls and more in ‘1999’ video

Time to get nostalgic...

Charli XCX and Troye Sivan have unveiled a mammoth throwback to the ’90s with the video for their new collaboration, ‘1999’.

Hot off the heels of performing the single live at New York’s Radio City Music Hall, the pair have released the song’s video – which is packed full of classic ’90s iconography.

The Ryan Staake and Charli XCX-directed video traverses about every reference imaginable, from Jack and Rose in the film Titanic and the Spice Girls’ ‘Say You’ll Be There’ video, to Slim Shady and Justin Timberlake‘s wiry locks. Even the rose petal scene from American Beauty winds its way in the video.

Charli and Sivan take it upon themselves to act out the parts – even if Sivan, who was born in 1995, was too young to really remember the period.

Some of the lyrics in the song include: “Yeah, I remember back home / Best friends, all night, no phone no cares / I was dumb and so young.”

The pair teased the collaboration last week by sharing the single’s artwork, which appears to be influenced by The Matrix.

The new track follows the release of Sivan’s second album, ‘Bloom’, in August. Read NME’s five-star review.

Charli’s latest release, ‘Pop 2’, arrived last year. The soloist has since shared songs including ‘No Angel’, ‘5 in the Morning’, and ‘Girls Night Out’.
