Here’s how much money Green Day actually make at the end of September

All thanks to the band's single 'Wake Me Up When September Ends'

The amount of money Green Day make at the end of September has been revealed, according to reports.

The band released their hit ‘Wake Me Up When September Ends’ as a single in 2005. It also featured on the 2004 album ‘American Idiot‘.

Since its release, the punk band have reportedly seen a spike in their earnings in the last days of September and the beginning of October. YouTube have released figures for the track’s views on the platform this year, with them rising sharply from around 50,000 a day in the rest of the year to over double that figure come the end of summer.

On September 1, 2018, the music video was watched 101,313 times, with that number climbing to 103,669 on September 30 and 107,058 on October 1.

Last year, YouTube’s Global Music Head Lyor Cohen revealed the platform pays around $0.003 per stream. Using that figure, Green Day will have earned $303.94 (£232.13) on September 1, $311.01 (£237.53) on September 30, and $321.17 (£245.29) on October 1 from YouTube streams of the track.

Meanwhile, Sex Pistols‘ Johnny Rotten recently hit out at the band, calling them “embarrassing”. “How many bands are out there like Green Day now?” he said. “I look at them and I have to laugh. They’re coat hangers, you know. A turgid version of something that doesn’t actually belong to them.”

The Billie Joe Armstrong-led trio have been rehearsing some of their classic albums in full lately. Over the summer, the band shared with fans they’d been busy running through records like ‘Insomniac‘ and ‘Dookie‘, sparking speculation they could play the albums as part of a 25th-anniversary tour for the latter next year.

Green Day are also believed to be working on a movie adaptation of ‘American Idiot’. In 2016, Armstrong told NME progress on the project was well underway, with backing from HBO.
