Nicolas Cage responds to online campaign for him to play Superman

Is he up for it?

Nicolas Cage has responded to online calls for him to play Superman.

Last month, a campaign for Cage to portray the Man of Steel gained momentum after the reported departure of Henry Cavill.

The actor is known to be a huge Superman fan and famously named his son Kal-El, the birth name of the comic hero on his home planet Krypton.

Posting on Twitter, one fan wrote: “With Henry Cavill out, there’s only one person who can save the DCEU and it’s Nicolas Cage as Superman, finally.”

Now, Cage has responded to the idea – but he’s a lot keener on tackling another role in the Superman universe.

When asked by The Guardian if he would take on the iconic hero, Cage responded: “Oh, I think my Superman days are long gone.”
Instead, a villainous turn could be in the offing. “I’d make a great Lex Luthor!”, Cage suggested.

Meanwhile, Cage revealed his fears that memes could ruin new horror movie Mandy.

The cult actor has become a beloved figure online in recent years – leading to a phenomenon dubbed “Cage Rage” that sees clips of the actor being placed in out-of-context scenarios.

“The issue is, with the advent of the internet, doing these mashups, where they pull these choice moments without the context of the whole film around it to support it, has created this meme-ification, if you will”, he told IndieWire.
