Football legend Chris Waddle says he’s “honoured” by the Arctic Monkeys tribute to him in Newcastle

The footballing legend took to Twitter to thank the lads

Footballing legend Chris Waddle has thanked the Arctic Monkeys for paying tribute to him during their recent gig in Newcastle on Friday (September 28), the final night of their UK tour.

During the encore of their Newcastle show, Alex Turner performed a stripped back, a-capella version of ‘Mardy Bum’ using a drum machine.

Turner sang “there’s only one Chrissie Waddle” during the song and added “walking in a Waddle wonderland” towards the end of the song, in reference to the County Durham born footballer who played for both Newcastle United and Sheffield Wednesday during his career.

Taking to twitter, Waddle thanked the band, adding that he was “totally honoured” by the tribute.

The Newcastle show was the final night of the band’s UK tour before they head to the US next month. The stripped-back version of ‘Mardy Bum’ was echoed a week earlier when the band performed a stripped-back performance of ‘A Certain Romance’ during the final show of their hometown stint in Sheffield (September 22).
