First-known David Bowie recording sells at auction for nearly quadruple its estimate

The track was discovered in an old bread basket earlier this year

The first-known David Bowie recording has sold at auction for nearly £40,000, it has been reported.

The track, titled ‘I Never Dreamed’, was discovered earlier this year in an old bread basket by David Hadfield. It was expected to sell for at least £10,000.

The recording was made when Bowie was 16 years old and played in a band called The Konrads. Hadfield served as the band’s drummer and manager. Bowie appeared on the song under his given name – David Jones – and it was the first time his voice had featured on a recording.

According to Omega Auctions, a “bidding frenzy” had caused the price for the tape to almost quadruple when it went up for sale earlier today (September 11). They said it was finally sold for £39,360.

Bowie left the Konrads shortly after the recording was made. Four years later, he released his self-titled debut album but only began to achieve success in 1969 when he released ‘Space Oddity‘.

Meanwhile, a new David Bowie cocktail bar is opening in London later this month. Ziggy’s, named after the star’s alter-ego Ziggy Stardust, will open on September 20 at the West End’s Hotel Café Royal.

The bar will feature drinks inspired by his 1972 album ‘The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars‘, which will take their names from his lyrics.

A new box set called ‘Loving The Alien (1983-1988)’ will be released on October 21. It will feature eight albums, including live albums and remix albums, alongside previously unreleased music.
