Death Cab For Cutie have recorded a cover of Frightened Rabbit‘s ‘My Backwards Walk’, in tribute to the late Scott Hutchison. Check it out below along with our interview with the band.
Hutchison died back in May after taking his own life following a battle with depression. The two bands had long been friends, having toured together a decade ago.
Now, in remembrance of Hutchison, Death Cab have shared a cover of the fan favourite track from their seminal album ‘The Midnight Organ Fight’ for a Spotify Studios NYC session.
Speaking to NME about frontman Hutchison’s life and legacy, Death Cab frontman Ben Gibbard said: “I find myself having those epiphany moments with a band, and those moments are fewer and far between. I’m blown away less frequently than I once was, and ‘The Midnight Organ Fight’ kind of came into my sphere at a pivotal time for me when I was going through a difficult time in my life.
“I felt similarly about that record and that band than I did when I first heard the Cure. That same feeling of like, ‘where did this band come from?’ It gave me that a similar lift that I’ve only felt five to ten times in the past ten years. It just doesn’t happen as often.”
Gibbard continued: “We kind of reached out to them and wanted to see if they would play some shows with us, and we immediately became really good friends. We did two tours together, and we just really, really loved Scott. For everything that he was going through, he was always a really lovely, positive, funny, self-effacing, wonderful human being. We would share emails and talk every couple of months, but it wasn’t as if we were each other’s greatest confidants.
“We’ve lost a giant. He was such an amazing writer and such an amazing human being. I think it’s been really wonderful to see in the tributes to him how much wider his music had gone than I’d ever really known. This music was as important to these people as it was to me.”
Meanwhile, F’Rabbit have announced their first live performance since Hutchison’s death, with a special show at Glasgow’s Kelvingrove Bandstand on December 9.
The show will be part of the Scotland-wide event ‘Sleep In The Park‘ event, which also takes place in Aberdeen, Dundee, and Edinburgh. Frightened Rabbit played the event last year at the Edinburgh leg. The event aims to raise around £6 million to help combat homelessness and is set to be attended by 12,000 people. Frightened Rabbit have also been asking fans to donate to the Scottish Association For Mental Health in Hutchison’s memory.
