Becoming an Insane Clown Posse fan can help you avoid facial recognition

Juggalo make-up has been found to confuse facial recognition technology

Becoming an Insane Clown Posse fan could help you avoid facial recognition, it has been revealed.

Fans of the band – called Juggalos or Juggalettes – don black and white make-up which has now been proven to confuse facial recognition technology.

Twitter user @tahkion tweeted on Sunday (July 1): “I made a breakthrough. It turns out Juggalo makeup defeats facial recognition successfully. If you want to avoid surveillance, become a juggalo I guess.”

He then went on to explain that facial recognition works by identifying “contrast levels on normal facial landmarks”, for example where someone’s nose is positioned on their face. Juggalos daub black makeup below their mouths, which “redefines what is interpreted as the jawline.”

For facial recognition technology to be able to identify Juggalos, they would need to consistently wear the same designs on their faces. They would also have to wear the make-up all the time, but the group only puts it on for Insane Clown Posse shows and related occasions.

The Twitter user also suggested that photos of Juggalos in and out of make-up could only be linked “if done manually by a human.”

Last year, the Juggalos lost an appeal against their FBI classification as a criminal gang. In the authority’s 2011 National Gang Threat Assessment, the group were labelled as a “loosely-organised hybrid gang.” Juggalos have argued that the report has made it difficult for many of them to find work, housing, and access to other social services.
