Ed Sheeran sued for allegedly copying Marvin Gaye’s ‘Let’s Get it On’

It's claimed 'Thinking Out Loud' pinches from 'Let's Get It On'

Ed Sheeran is reportedly being sued $100 million for allegedly copying a Marvin Gaye song.

The lawsuit claims that ‘Thinking Out Loud’ steals from ‘Let’s Get It On’.

A suit was reportedly first filed against the ‘Shape of You’ singer in 2016 by the family of Ed Townsend, who co-wrote Gaye’s hit. They claimed that Sheeran lifted a variety of musical elements – including melody, harmony, and rhythmic components—from ‘Let’s Get It On’.

TMZ reports that a different party has now launched a suit against Sheeran for the same copyright infringement.

Structured Asset Sales bought one third of the copyright for ‘Let’s Get It On’. The company is now seeking $100 million in damages for infringement.

‘Let’s Get It On’  reached number 1 on the Billboard Pop Singles chart on September 8, 1973.

Sheeran’s ‘Thinking Out Loud’– also a number one record – was the first single ever to spend one year inside the UK Top 40.

Earlier this year, Lana Del Rey claimed Radiohead had filed a copyright infringement lawsuit against her due to supposed similarities between her ‘Lust For Life’ track ‘Get Free’ and their 1993 hit ‘Creep’.

The band’s publishers denied legal proceedings were underway and the singer later suggested the issue had been settled when she told the crowd at Lollapalooza Brasil: “Now that my lawsuit’s over, I guess I can sing that song anytime I want, right?”
