“Anything can inspire me” – Janet Jackson confirms work on new music is under way

Jackson's last full-length release came in October 2015 with her eleventh studio album 'Unbreakable'

Janet Jackson has confirmed that she is currently working on new music.

The news suggests that Jackson will soon deliver on a follow-up to her last full-length body of work ‘Unbreakable’, which was released back in October 2015.

Speaking to Billboard ahead of the publication’s annual Music Awards on Sunday (May 20) – where she’ll receive the prestigious Icon Award – Jackson disclosed that she was currently writing new music, but wouldn’t be drawn on specifics.

“I wish I could,” Jackson replied when asked to discuss the direction of her new music. “I’m not trying to avoid the question and be secretive, but the truth is that I don’t try to analyse the creative process while it’s still ongoing. I’m very intuitive about writing. Anything can inspire me.

“I remembered an especially painful chapter in my early life last night before going to bed. That might be a song,” she continued about her current sources of creative inspiration. “I woke up this morning and heard a bird chirping in a rhythm that captivated my heart. Maybe that will turn into a new groove. Like everyone else, my feelings are fluid. My ideas are fleeting. I like to keep it that way.

“I can’t decide in advance what a song or an album concept will be. I have to let those songs and concepts come to me rather than chase them down.”

Jackson will perform at a number of festivals this summer, including FYF Festival in LA in July.
