Guitarist Cantrell recently told Guitar World that the band’s new album is “a record we haven’t done yet”, but still has their “fingerprint”.

“There’s some really heavy shit, some really ugly stuff, some real beautiful stuff, some weirdo trippy shit,” Cantrell said.

Last year, bassist Mike Inez discussed working the new LP, saying that they had just started recording in the studio.

“Being in the studio for twenty hours a day isn’t fun, but it’s a great job,” he said. “But we try to make that our clubhouse and separate that from the business, kind of. So we’re still in that… playing in the sandbox, kind of, for this new record anyways. We’re still getting together in the same city, and plugging in in the same room.”

2017 also saw Alice In Chains tribute to late frontman Layne Staley on what would have been their former singer’s 50th birthday.

Staley passed away in 2002. William DuVall joined the group in 2006, serving as co-lead vocalist with Cantrell.
