Fly-on-the-wall Ed Sheeran documentary bought by Apple

It's directed by the singer's cousin and was screened at Tribeca Film Festival yesterday

Apple has obtained the rights to a new Ed Sheeran documentary, which captures the singer’s rise to pop superstardom.

Songwriter was directed by Sheeran’s cousin Murray Cummings. It’s his first film project and offers a no-frills, fly-on-the-wall insight into the ‘Shape of You’ artist’s career. The documentary aired at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York yesterday (April 23).

Cummings – who became Sheeran’s tour videographer when he was just starting out – said that he wanted to reflect the singer’s down-to-earth personality with the project

“I just wanted to show the Ed that I see every day,” he told TIME. “Dressed down, chilling out, writing a bunch of songs, hanging out with his mates — who are luckily a bunch of really good songwriters.”

With Songwriter not featuring any interviews or voiceover, Cummings added: “You don’t need to set up a lot anymore. I wanted the audience to feel like it was happening around them.”

Now, Billboard report that Apple has purchased the world screen rights to the film for ‘low to mid-seven figures’. It will be made available in cinemas as well as Apple platforms.

Hitting the screen once again, Ed is also to star in a new film from Danny Boyle and Richard Curtis set in a world where The Beatles never existed.

Meanwhile, Sheeran has landed two nominations for the  Ivor Novello Awards 2018. Now in their 63rd year, the awards are presented by the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers & Authors in association with PRS for Music. They “celebrate, honour and reward excellence in British and Irish songwriting and composing” and represent “the pinnacle of musical achievement and peer recognition”.
