Paying tribute to the Thin White Duke, new David Bowie subway cards have been introduced in New York City.
As Brooklyn Vegan points out, brand new Bowie MetroCards are now available at Broadway-Lafayette station, just a few blocks from where the late legend used to live in SoHo for a portion of his life.
The entire Broadway-Lafayette station has been transformed into something of a tribute to the icon, too. Adverts for the ‘David Bowie Is’ exhibition – currently taking place at the Brooklyn Museum – decorate the station, and outside, there’s another giant mural.
Costing $6.50, the new MetroCards reportedly have a two ride minimum.
It’s not the first time that New York City has rolled out special MetroCards. Last year, they introduced Twin Peaks subway fare cards in homage to David Lynch’s cult show, along with another Supreme-branded card.
The other side of the Atlantic, the first statue of David Bowie was unveiled in Aylesbury Market Square earlier this year, close to the town’s Friars music venue where Bowie first debuted his Ziggy Stardust persona in the early 1970s. Within 48 hours of the tribute being erected, the statue was vandalised.
At this year’s Record Store Day – which takes place on April 21 – three rare David Bowie records are set for release, including an iconic live performance. Full information can be found on the David Bowie website.
