T-Pain and Akon might want to update their résumés. If 2008 was the year hip-hop remade "Paper Planes", 2009 is shaping up to be the year rappers get their hooks from Santogold. Sampling the same track as Jay Z's Kanye West-produced "Brooklyn Go Hard" (presumably due for an official release this year), Memphis' Three 6 Mafia and Project Pat bring Santogold's "Shove It" from West Indian-flavored Brooklyn down to the dirty dirty. Dubby reverb still coats Santi White's confrontational, her-against-the-world vocals, only now the track is built around sweeping crunk synths rather than the original's guitars and horns with their quasi-Jamaican bounce. White leads the way until Pat's hard-swaggering, Bun B-tinged verse replaces Spank Rock's original rhymes-- "I don't own a boat," we're told, re: drug dealers and their haters.
