30 Seconds To Mars frontman Jared Leto is to publish a book documenting his recent trip to Haiti in order to raise much-needed funds for the continuing humanitarian efforts following the 2010 earthquake. On January 12, 2010, the Caribbean island was struck by a massive earthquake which took the lives of 230,000 people and left a further 1.5 million homeless. Jared - who, as a child, spent a year in Haiti while his mother Constance helped run two medical clinics - decided to revisit the island last month to see how international charities are rebuilding the country one year on."Being thrust into that country at a young age made a massive impact," the frontman tells Kerrang!. "I found it to be magical and beautiful. I'm very glad I decided to take this time and go. Although there was a lot of tragedy everywhere, I'm happy that I was able to reconnect with this beautiful place."There is a lot of work to be done," he adds. "A lot of people are in need. The infrastructure is a disaster and the situation is dire, but the Haitian people are unstoppable. They have enormous challenges in front of them that sometimes must seem beyond repair, but their spirit is alive and well and they are looking toward a promising tomorrow. It's an inspiration to witness."During his trip, the frontman visited various towns including Leogane and Cite Soleil, seizing the opportunity to take photographs for his forthcoming book, which will be released in the spring to help raise funds for charities assisting those affected by the earthquake. For the full interview, and exclusive pictures, be sure to pick up this week's Kerrang! magazine.
