With their carefully sustained clandestine aesthetic and tendency toward darker but still deeply jubilant dance music, the Golden Filter are, in one sense or another, the NYC version of the Knife. And, yeah, in other senses their not. As far as Big Apple groups go, though, Penelope and Stephen do an admirable job of getting out there and going for it without the attendant overexposure. Now, after a series of impeccably packaged singles and sundry remixes, their official full-length debut Voluspa is out in April. Take a listen to "Hide Me," which might sound familiar until it goes where the "demo" didn't.Continue reading The Golden Filter - "Hide Me"...

The Golden Filter reworked “Lay It Down” for Peter Bjorn & John, so PBJ returned the favor with this remix of the NYC duo’s “Hide Me” single. The original “Hide Me” comes off both delicate and strong, gossamer vocals with a hit-the-(New York) streets beat on it. Peter ...

New York disco crew the Golden Filter introduced us to their official full-length debut Voluspa via the updated version of “Hide Me,” but it’s the icy title track that gets the video. As always, Penelope and Stephen’s aesthetic sense is impeccable (and right up my alley): A muted walk/bow in the snow, a de...

The Golden Filter, who made beautiful music in the shadows of our CMJ party, maintain the mystery in this aesthetically tight (see "Sold Gold") Warran Wright-directed video for "Thunderbird." When we first posted the track, I thought it was helpful to offer up Penelope and Stephen's (or their label's) background thoughts on the song. It's worth ...

It's easy to think of the Golden Filter primarily as a remix project because they do a lot of them. That said, the New York "discopop" duo of Penelope and Stephen (and other live folks) sound good doing their own stuff, too. Take a listen to "Thunderbird," for instance. Their label notes: The Thunderbird of the title refers to a bird of Native ...
