NAME: of Montreal PROGRESS REPORT: Prepping False Priest ("I'm back and forth between The Controller Sphere, and False Priest") the followup to Skeletal Lamping, out sometime in August or September. Engineered by Jon Brion (probably). Featuring cameos from Solange Knowles, Janelle Monae and "one or two other people..." The anticipated new of Montreal album may or may not be complete. Kevin Barnes says it all depends on how some upcoming sessions with Jon Brion work out. Barnes, who's always worked at home, alone, will meet up with Brion in early spring to work on the 16 songs that will likely make the new record. "If I wasn't going to go out there with Jon then they'd basically be done. They could be done. If I go out there with Jon and we both decide it's not working or whatever, I'll still have an album. And if I go out there and figure this is really great, then I'll have a different album," he says. Either way, the album won't be Skeletal Lamping over again. Barnes says the band is using this break to rethink their live performances, and have made an album that accommodates that. His plans are ambitious: he'd like to get rid of of Montreal's pre-recorded backing tracks, and round out the band line-up to ten or so musicians. "We're going to try to do something closer to the kind of bands that Curtis Mayfield or Stevie Wonder had in the '70s," says Barnes. Continue reading Progress Report: of Montreal...

Just before the release of his band's ninth album, Skeletal Lamping, we talk to Kevin Barnes about the process of writing and performing by himself, the ways he was affected by the backlash to his song's appearance in an Outback Steakhouse commercial, and how there's a middle-aged black transgender man inside us all.read more
HEALTH had no intention of hitting the road this fall; in fact, they were all set to start work on their follow-up to last year's self-titled affair right about now. Then Trent Reznor came a-calling, and now the band won't get around to that recording until they return from a month-long tour that has them spending a little time with Nine Inch Na...
When recapping of Montreal's over-the-top Skeletal Lamping-themed show at Roseland this past Friday, we mentioned and posted a video of their "Smells Like Teen Spirit" cover with MGMT's Andrew VanWyngarden. The clip was a tad grainy, though, and it didn't capture the entire song, so please allow this MP3 to help you more fully reach Nirvana.
That ka-razy Of Montreal show at the Roseland Ballroom the other night that found Kevin Barnes riding the white horse (or was it a white pony?) included an encore jam with Andrew VanWyngarden MGMT on "Smells Like Teen Spirit". You Ain't No Picasso has an mp3, the sound's not too bad, and the rendition is pretty darn faithful.MP3:> Of Mont...

To bring to life the wet nightmare that is Skeletal Lamping's funky first single, of Montreal left the costumes and live animals onstage and instead turned to animation group SSSR. Directors Marc Reisbig and Hanne Berkaak imagine a drawing board come to life with colorful creatures, aliens, and personified household objects. While we miss Georgi...
