Rage Against The Machine are currently at Number One in the mid-week reports issued by the body who compile the weekly singles and albums charts in the UK.Despite falling into second place yesterday on the iTunes downloads chart, the figures released by The Official Charts Company this morning reveal that the campaign to make the Rage Against The Machine hit - which is famous for it's defiant refrain of 'Fuck you I won't do what you tell me' - the British Christmas Number One is beating X Factor winner Joe McElderry by 5,875 copies."This is shaping up to be a very exciting battle between two different records which have captured the nation's imagination," The Official Charts Company's managing director Martin Talbot told The Guardian. "But, although Rage Against The Machine have started off in front, according to our initial sales estimates, there is no doubt that this tussle is far from over."Indeed, senior music industry figures expect McElderry to rapidly overtake Rage when physical copies of his single - a cover of Miley Cyrus' recent hit, The Climb - hit music retailers later this week. In related news, Rage Against The Machine guitarist Tom Morello has urged rock fans to lend their support to the campaign which was started a few weeks ago by fan Jon Morter as a reaction to X Factor mogul Simon Cowell's perceived dominance of the Christmas singles market.“Rage's Killing In The Name & the X-Factor's goofy Christmas single are neck and neck for number one spot on [the] UK charts,” said Morello on his official Twitter page. “England, now is your time!”So, if you haven't done so already, make sure you buy Killing In The Name before next Saturday and let's see if rock fans can help make chart history!
