As he does from time to time, Sufjan Stevens has upped his thoughts on a new Asthmatic Kitty signing. This time it's an interview that feels especially personal. The discussion takes place with ex-Marzuki band mate, folksy Seattle singer-songwriter Shannon Stevens. (Bonnie "Prince" Billy covered her "I'll Be Glad" on Lie Down In The Light.) She's just released her second album, The Breadwinner, her first in almost 10 years. In the piece, Sufjan talks about that old college band Marzuki and describes Stephens as possessing "a gorgeous alto voice like Judy Collins and a penchant for writing catchy folky songs about love and heartache." He also updates us on what Stephens did after college ("she moved to Seattle, got married, raised a beautiful family, worked in landscaping, and grew older, wiser, and more complete") and where she is now. In the end, Sufjan and Shannon's conversation sheds light on both participants: We get naked insights into Sufjan's process, his output, etc. Take a look at a few of the highlights after you listen to The Breadwinner's "In Summer In The Heat."Continue reading Sufjan Stevens Interviews Shannon Stephens...

Sufjan Stevens makes music all the time. Earlier this year, for instance, Stevens and his stepfather Lowell Brams collaborated on an ambient instrumental LP called Aporia. But Stevens does not make proper studio albums -- albums full of proper Sufjan Stevens songs -- often enough. The last real Sufjan Stevens album, the fragile and magnificent&a...

Aporia is a new collaborative album between Sufjan Stevens and his stepfather Lowell Brams. It was originally supposed to come out this Friday (3/27), but like a lot of album releases, coronavirus has thrown a wrench in those plans. In this case, Stevens and Brams' label Asthmatic Kitty turned it into a positive: Aporia is…

COVID-19 is impacting the music industry in a lot of different ways. Tours are cancelled, which means that the album release dates they were tied to seem up in the air; record stores are, for the most part, physically shuttered, which means that purchases will mostly take place online. In the past few days alone,…

Next week, Sufjan Stevens will release an album of New Age instrumentals called Aporia with Lowell Brams, his stepfather and longtime partner in the record label Asthmatic Kitty. (He's the Lowell of Carrie & Lowell fame, and speaking of which, how about another album of proper songs, Suf?) Thus far we've heard two tracks from…

Five years after he released the devastating Carrie & Lowell, Sufjan Stevens is still in side-project city. Next month, he'lll release a new album, but it won't be a regular Sufjan Stevens album. Instead, he's teamed up with his stepfather Lowell Brams -- the co-head of his Asthmatic Kitty label, and one of the inspirations…
