Last night at MoMA, Dan Rossen and Fred Nicolaus premiered their first video, for In Ear Park's woozy standout "No One Does It Like You." It was a PopRally event, the same performance series that has brought Sigur Rós and comedy short films to the museum in recent months. We sent Natasha Ryan to bring back images, and tapped the internet to bring back the video itself. They really went for it with the clip, depicting a battlefield populated with a battalion of short-skirted, masked, rifle-toting ballet dancers squaring off against a ghost-faced, marching troupe wielding bayonets and family portraits when in the infirmary. People die, ghosts arise, the dancing continues. Duh. After the crowd at MoMA sat through a Q&A with production team Directors Bureau, co-director/costume designer Marcel Dzama, and co-director Patrick Daughters, D.O.E. performed. If it all seems a bit ceremonious, that's probably because the video deserves a bit more than a simple publicist email with html code for posting. Last month we premiered "1997," a non-In Ear Park track from the DUMBO Sessions. The song showed up again last week when Department Of Eagles stopped by Daytrotter. Three's a charm, so Doctor Rosen Rosen (no, not Doctor Rossen Rossen) has given the song a remix, explaining he added "drums, strings, piano, synths, and muthafuk'n flugel horn." Alw...
A low-key environment suits the psychedelic pop of Department of Eagles new In Ear Park, as we heard in a recent "DUMBO Session" and on Pitchfork.tv's "Don't Look Down". In addition to performances of the latest record's "Phantom Other", "Herring Bone" and "Balmy Night", the Brooklyn duo of Fred Nicolaus and Grizzly Bear's Daniel Rossen recorde...
Dan Rossen Month continues with another cut from the Department Of Eagles DUMBO session that brought us the unreleased "1997," featuring Dan and Fred alone in a Brooklyn room with a view. This live "Herring Bone" is stripped of In Ear Park's arrangements and accouterments, presented here in its piano-man core, unadorned but for a few touches of...
A great record that Daniel Rossen has called "too personal" for main band Grizzly Bear gets even more personal in this session recorded live at the Atlantic Sound Studio in Brooklyn's DUMBO area. "Those nights you wandered online/ You won't get to relive them," Rossen sings on "Herring Bone", a tune from In Ear Park, his Best New Music-crowned l...
Not like live television debut, I mean like they had never before played as a band in public until last night, when they did so before a nationally televised audience. No pressure, guys. And yes that came pretty fast, but they had Bookeaters to plug, and chances are Rossen made a fan of Conan's music booker last time he was on. Dan and Fred perf...
