Bradford Cox, Lockett Pundt, Moses Archuleta, and Josh Fauver (but not Whitney Petty) played Noise Pop 2009 last week at San Francisco's Mezzanine, and Wolfgang's Vault has video of the whole Deerhunter set. It's great to see the Atlanta band continuing to gain force and confidence, most evidently in Cox's voice-- it's right up front-- along with the slight variations and extended jams they've added to keep the songs fresh. Going from "Born to Run" on the house PA to first two tracks from Cryptograms is a canny, showmanlike juxtaposition, helped by a brightly flashing light show. But the real news here is the new songs: four of 'em, including the stirring, eight-minute finale. On first listen, the new tunes sound like a welcome extension of the group's Cryptograms side B/Microcastle direction. One even takes more of an Everly Brothers-style folk-pop trajectory, with probably Deerhunter's most bubblegum opening line ever: "Do you believe in love at first sight?" Yes, I'm certain that it happens all the time. A couple others are more propulsive, but still relatively melodic and direct, including one introduced as "Famous Last Words". The setlist also includes familiar favorites like "Never Stops", "Spring Hall Convert", "Nothing Ever Happened" (shreds!), "Hazel St." (dedicated to Harvey Milk-- Castro Street, not Athens, Ga.), "Saved By Old Times". "If there's two things I really care about in this world it's noise and pop," Cox says. "Hey, sometimes not in that order!" Now if only somebody could post the encore.[Microcastle/Weird Era Cont. is out now on Kranky]
