Just thinking about krautrock duo Neu! on this please-let-it-be-spring Brooklyn day makes me want to take an impromptu road trip to anywhere. They made car music for the long stretches in-between rest stops-- think endless drives through European flat lands. The '70s band's minimalist groove has hypnotized countless artists over the years; without Neu!, something like LCD Soundsystem's Sound of Silver would not be the album we know and love. And now some of the groups who owe debts to Klaus Dinger and Michael Rother are giving back on the tribute album Brand Neu!, out May 11 on Feraltone. The record features a mix of previously released songs by bands whose love of Neu! is obvious (like Sonic Youth's "Two Cool Rock Chicks Listening To Neu!" from their Ciccone Youth album and LCD's "Watch the Tapes"), along with rarities by bands whose love of Neu! is not so obvious (like Oasis's actually-not-bad "I Can See It Now").A previously unreleased track called "Sketch 1_08" from Dinger's post-Neu! band La Düesseldorf is also included-- it marks the last track the drummer was involved in before passing away last year. An unreleased solo track from Rother, an exclusive track from School of Seven Bells, and songs from Primal Scream, Cornelius, Kasabian and Foals help to fill out the rest of the track list, which you can nod along to below:read more
