Photo by Alicia J. RoseIt's never a bad idea to go see the Thermals. Five years ago, I saw the Portland ragers play a converted auto body shop in Baltimore with the Hold Steady opening, and they wrecked. They're playing slightly larger venues these days, but it's safe to say that they will bring same bouncing-off-walls basement-punk energy and accidentally-spitting-on-mics urgency to every show they'll on their huge North American tour this spring. Bands generally don't book gigantic cross-continental odysseys for no reason, so you probably won't be surprised to learn that the Thermals have an album coming out. On April 7, their new label Kill Rock Stars will release Now We Can See, their fourth full-length. And on April 18, Record Store Day, the Thermals and KRS labelmates Thao With the Get Down Stay Down will release a limited-run split 7" that you can only get at independent record stores. There are some great things about seeing a band like the Thermals. For one, you know you're gonna see at least twenty of your favorite The Thermals songs in one night. And even at a less-than-sold-out show that was a late-add to a pair of sold-out gigs Friday and Saturday, tired crowd and tired band, there wasn't a moment where Hutch and Kathy w...
When you combine elderly people and indie rock, you get hilarious memes. That's just science. Scrapple.tv's Breakfast At Sulimay's is a Web video series in which three seasoned listeners critique a wide range of recent tracks at a Philadelphia diner. It's been around for several years (here they review the Thermals' "Pillar Of Salt") but is all ...
(Photo from last year's Rachael Ray SXSW party by Tyler Grisham)Last month, we reported that TV chef Rachael Ray would throw another food-and-indie rock party at SXSW. At the time, the only bands rumored to be playing were the Airborne Toxic Event and the Hold Steady. Well, it's confirmed: As reported by EW.com and confirmed by Ray's website, ...
As we previously reported, the feisty foodie is returning to Austin this year for her second awkwardly titled (and conceptualized) SXSW showcase: Rose's Mojito and Rachael Ray's Feedback: The B-Side. It takes place 3/21 at Maggie Mae's with the Hold Steady, the New York Dolls (!), Bob Schneider, the Airborne Toxic Event, Ra Ra Riot, Semi Preciou...
The last we heard from the Thermals about Now We Can See, the band's upcoming fourth LP (and Kill Rock Stars debut), vocalist Hutch Harris said it was going to be "Long, for us." However unlikely that might have seemed for the consistently laconic Oregon punkers, we have our first bit of proof with the title track "Now We Can See", coming in at ...
