Photo by Alicia J. RoseIt's never a bad idea to go see the Thermals. Five years ago, I saw the Portland ragers play a converted auto body shop in Baltimore with the Hold Steady opening, and they wrecked. They're playing slightly larger venues these days, but it's safe to say that they will bring same bouncing-off-walls basement-punk energy and accidentally-spitting-on-mics urgency to every show they'll on their huge North American tour this spring. Bands generally don't book gigantic cross-continental odysseys for no reason, so you probably won't be surprised to learn that the Thermals have an album coming out. On April 7, their new label Kill Rock Stars will release Now We Can See, their fourth full-length. And on April 18, Record Store Day, the Thermals and KRS labelmates Thao With the Get Down Stay Down will release a limited-run split 7" that you can only get at independent record stores. In Portland punks the Thermals’ video for “The Sunset,” the second single from their new album Desperate Ground, badass bassist Kathy Foster gets a star turn. She plays a boxer training for a big fight with, as far as I can tell, the camera operator, and she also gives us her version of Rosie Perez’s [...]

Portland trio the Thermals have been cranking out urgent, strident, catchy-as-all-hell pogo-punk anthems for more than a decade now, and recent jams like “Born To Kill” and “The Sunset” show absolutely no signs that they’re showing down. Their album Desperate Ground lands next week, and you can g...

Since 2002, the Thermals have crafted raucous, ebullient post-pop-punk tunes that are ridiculously catchy and singularly intense. Over the years, Hutch Harris, Kathy Foster, and — for the last few albums — Westin Glass, have honed their craft from their homebase in Portland, Oregon, releasing five records filled with thoughtf...

“The Sunset” is the Thermals’ follow-up to Desperate Ground-first single “Born To Kill.” The track is much more self-reflective than “Born To Kill” but is still packed with the same anthemic energy that post-pop punk demands. Check it out below. Desperate Ground is out 4/16 vi...
