Rock music is notoriously the realm of arrested adolescents, randy adults still acting like they're just old enough to drive. The Boy Least Likely To, on the other hand, are a different breed: The band is two grown men-- multi-instrumentalist Pete Hobbs and singer-songwriter Jof Owen-- who sound like they're just old enough to wait for the school bus by themselves. "Every Goliath Has Its David", from the duo's long-awaited second album, The Law of the Playground, is all pre-tween fantasy and boyhood bravado: "I've got a little bag of marbles and a catapult," sings Owen. "I feel very small, but I could make myself big if I wanted to." There aren't many bands that could-- or would want to-- write a line as shamelessly twee as "I've got puppy powers that I'm not afraid to use," but here Owen and Hobbs skirt preciousness by acknowledging the anthrax in the Lik-M-Aid: in this case, the possibility that this goliath will squish them like bugs. As Owen faces down that big fear, Hobbs plays Hobbes to his Calvin and spikes the chorus with synth strikes and a bubbly beat, like a toy-box Dexy's Midnight Runners. The Boy Least Likely To know they're not likely to bring down this giant, but they'll take that impossible shot anyway. They grow up so fast.[from The Law of the Playground; due 03/03/09 on on Too Young to Die in the UK and +1 in the U.S.]

Just when you thought the Boy Least Likely To couldn't be any more twee. The Jayne Vidheecharoen directed video for "When Life Gives Me Lemons I Make Lemonade" is so sweet as fuck it almost hurts.
