Say it ain't so, Camera Obscura. "This maudlin career has come to an end/ I don't wanna be sad again," sings Tracyanne Campbell on the thumping midtempo title track from the Glaswegian indie poppers' fourth album (and first for 4AD), the forthcoming My Maudlin Career. The arrangment stays close to the wispy-voiced, Phil Spector-informed pop melancholy that Camera Obscura have gradually refined from Stuart Murdoch-produced first single "Eighties Fan" to 2004 sophomore LP Underachievers Please Try Harder and 2006's Let's Get Out of This Country. A blaring fuzztone guitar line jostles amid the reverb against plinky keyboards, pealing organ chords, and cathedral-sized snares. "In your eyes there's a sadness enough to kill the both of us," Campbell sings later. Please, guys, stay together for the kids.MP3:> Camera Obscura: "My Maudlin Career" (requires an e-mail address)[from My Maudlin Career; due 04/20/09 on 4AD]

“Troublemaker,” a song from the Scottish indie-poppers Camera Obscura, is a pleasantly jangling ditty that seems to call out for one of those videos that’s all amber-hued shots of young people staring flirtily at each other.
