The Smashing Pumpkins ' recent reunion tour sucked real bad and nobody wants to hear their new music (be honest), but their marketing game is as strong as it's ever been. First they placed an old song in the Watchmen trailer that everybody lost their shit over last year. Then they debuted a new jam in "Guitar Hero: World Tour" and turned the video for another into a promo for, uh, TNA Wrestling's "Bound for Glory" pay-per-view. (Look, say what you will, but Kurt Angle in 30s gangster gear looks absolutely badass.) So the Pumpkins themselves might not be even remotely relevant, but whoever's in charge of getting their songs out there sure is. And now the dessicated alt-rock vets have scored possibly their biggest-ever cross-platform coup: Placing a song in a Super Bowl commercial. The Pumpkins' "FOL" will soundtrack the commercial for the Hyundai Genesis Coupe, which will air immediately before kickoff on Sunday. Because, you know, when you think of the mid-90s modern-rock-radio glory days, you think of Hyundai. According to a press release, the commercial will focus on the car's "fluid design and track-worthy performance." Fellow rank opportunist Yo-Yo Ma will also soundtrack a Genesis Coupe ad, though that one won't air during the Super Bowl. But that's OK, because the game will totally suck because the Ravens aren't in it. (Via Stereogum.)
