If TV on the Radio have heroes, it's pretty clear David Bowie is one of them. The Brooklyn band's apparent debt to Bowie's late-1970s work with Brian Eno is well-documented, and Bowie himself sang on my favorite TV on the Radio album to date, 2006's Return to Cookie Mountain. Such reverence is evident in TVOTR's cover of Bowie's legendary "Heroes", which is set to appear on War Child charity compilation Heroes and sticks pretty closely to the original. After a stripped-down opening, heavy drum programming covers the song, while the guitars fade deeper into texture than the rhythmic chug of the 1977 version. Kyp Malone and Tunde Adebimpe's falsetto-prone voices won't make you forget Bowie, but still, this version will help me to forget the Wallflowers' Godzilla-soundtracking attempt. Oh fuck, now I just made myself remember it.[from Heroes; due 02/24/09 on Astralwerks]
