When the Decemberists aren't making rock operas, they're still tilting with the windmills of jangly, theatrical, hyperliterate chamber pop. And I don't know if you know, but those things are damn tough to kill. On "Sleepless", the Portland, Ore., band's contribution to blog-savvy charity comp Dark Was the Night, Colin Meloy's weary entreaties of "hand it over" get reinforced by orchestration, piano, banjo, and sighing backing vocals, over the standard acoustic-rock lineup. This one's sad and slow-- and drags on for nearly eight minutes. "You did your time, so thank you very much," Meloy sings near the end. After a quick listen I prefer Morrissey's "You Were Good in Your Time" ("...and we thank you"), but I'll take this one to fill the intermission whenever Hazards of Love hits Broadway.Stream:> The Decemberists: "Sleepless"[from Dark Was the Night; due 02/17/09 via Red Hot]
