Photo by Kathryn YuM.I.A. is really racking up the industry-sanctioned accolades now. It's getting a bit silly. Her Pazz and Jop singles win for "Paper Planes" wasn't such a big surprise-- music nerds have loved Ms. Arulpragasam for years. But non-geeks are starting to catch up. First there was that Grammy nomination, and now an Oscar nomination for "O...Saya", her collaboration with composer A.R. Rahman from Slumdog Millionaire. But if you're worrying about all these stuffy award notices suffocating her rebel spirit, worry no more. In a statement reacting to the Oscar nom, she still pretty much sounds like a badass: "This is a great honor. Thank you to all the people who are supporting us and the making of a real story of a slumdog millionaire…maybe I can afford to book Dave Chappelle at the baby shower now. Thank you again; My mum wants everyone to know what wonderful news this is for her."Moms love the Oscars. And, oh yeah, Dave Chappelle: Holler at a new mom! Or at least do something...at some point in the future! (Please.)M.I.A.'s baby is still due Grammy night, February 8. So she'll physically be able to do her thing on Oscar night, February 22, but whether or not she'll take the stage in front of Jack, Tom, Kate and every other movie star on earth is still up in the air.

Last night, M.I.A. played her first North American show in a minute, filling up the Montreal venue Metropolis and opening with a new track, one that may appear on her forthcoming Matangi. At least, I think it was a new track; there’s always the possibility that it’s an old one remixed so severely that I [...]
Film director and M.I.A. collaborator Steven Loveridge took to Tumblr to post a teaser trailer for a documentary about the artist that has been put on hold, apparently, due to funding issues. M.I.A.’s labels had the trailer removed from YouTube within hours, citing legal and financial problems holding up completion of the film. The tra...

Here is a previously unheard track from M.I.A. called “Only 1 U.” We still know very little about her fourth full-length Matangi, so without a tracklist, we can’t say whether this comes from the album or not. But considering its message (“there’s only one you”) and the record’...
At the start of the week, M.I.A. released a video for Matangi lead single “Bring The Noize.” Here is the Matangi Gold Edition, which is the same clip presented with a gold leaf-like effect on top of it. I miss the purple hair, Maya, but this looks pretty cool. Check it out below. Matangi should [...]

Last week, M.I.A. shared her rave-damaged new single “Bring The Noize,” and it was one of our favorite songs of the week. This morning, she’s dropped the video, in which she looks absolutely glorious and tough as hell while flexing bright-pink hair and some seriously done-up nails. The clip seems to take place at th...
