Photo by Kathryn YuM.I.A. is really racking up the industry-sanctioned accolades now. It's getting a bit silly. Her Pazz and Jop singles win for "Paper Planes" wasn't such a big surprise-- music nerds have loved Ms. Arulpragasam for years. But non-geeks are starting to catch up. First there was that Grammy nomination, and now an Oscar nomination for "O...Saya", her collaboration with composer A.R. Rahman from Slumdog Millionaire. But if you're worrying about all these stuffy award notices suffocating her rebel spirit, worry no more. In a statement reacting to the Oscar nom, she still pretty much sounds like a badass: "This is a great honor. Thank you to all the people who are supporting us and the making of a real story of a slumdog millionaire…maybe I can afford to book Dave Chappelle at the baby shower now. Thank you again; My mum wants everyone to know what wonderful news this is for her."Moms love the Oscars. And, oh yeah, Dave Chappelle: Holler at a new mom! Or at least do something...at some point in the future! (Please.)M.I.A.'s baby is still due Grammy night, February 8. So she'll physically be able to do her thing on Oscar night, February 22, but whether or not she'll take the stage in front of Jack, Tom, Kate and every other movie star on earth is still up in the air.

M.I.A. is supposed to be a messenger, but the mission of her music is often obscured by critics’ and listeners’ schismatic view of her work. But before her war with the NFL, her allegiance with WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, or those goddamn truffle-fries, she was a neon prism at the end of a long musical [...]
M.I.A.’s Matangi is out today and along with the religious iconography that is referenced throughout the album, in a recent interview with NPR, the “Bad Girls” rapper has explained that the middle finger she gave at the 2012 Super Bowl halftime show is part of that spiritual expression. When asked why she did it, sh...

Talking to Pitchfork last month, M.I.A. called “Paper Planes” “an accident”: “It wasn’t a song we made for the masses. It took two years to get popular, and there were many fights about censoring the gunshot sounds.” And she’s right; the track took a weird and circui...
Grab some popcorn (but don’t dare leave butter stains on that keyboard) and cozy up in front of your laptop screen because the inaugural YouTube Music Awards are going down this evening live from New York’s Pier 36.
