Photo by Kathryn YuM.I.A. is really racking up the industry-sanctioned accolades now. It's getting a bit silly. Her Pazz and Jop singles win for "Paper Planes" wasn't such a big surprise-- music nerds have loved Ms. Arulpragasam for years. But non-geeks are starting to catch up. First there was that Grammy nomination, and now an Oscar nomination for "O...Saya", her collaboration with composer A.R. Rahman from Slumdog Millionaire. But if you're worrying about all these stuffy award notices suffocating her rebel spirit, worry no more. In a statement reacting to the Oscar nom, she still pretty much sounds like a badass: "This is a great honor. Thank you to all the people who are supporting us and the making of a real story of a slumdog millionaire…maybe I can afford to book Dave Chappelle at the baby shower now. Thank you again; My mum wants everyone to know what wonderful news this is for her."Moms love the Oscars. And, oh yeah, Dave Chappelle: Holler at a new mom! Or at least do something...at some point in the future! (Please.)M.I.A.'s baby is still due Grammy night, February 8. So she'll physically be able to do her thing on Oscar night, February 22, but whether or not she'll take the stage in front of Jack, Tom, Kate and every other movie star on earth is still up in the air.

On her 1989 debut Raw Like Sushi, Neneh Cherry, the Swedish-born and London-based daughter of jazz great Don, sang and rapped with dangerous levels of style and helped create a snarling-cool blueprint that people like Lauryn Hill and M.I.A. would, to some extent, follow. After 1996′s Man, she largely retired from music to raise kids. [...

M.I.A. has had a messy couple of years: The Super Bowl flap, the great single with no album attached, the years-long wait for Matangi. And when stuff like that happens, the artist can usually share some blame with her management. Well, now M.I.A. is looking for new management. As SPIN points out, M.I.A. tweeted earlier [...]
