"The Take-Away Shows" meets "Black Cab Sessions" in this intimate recording shot by Vincent Moon for La Blogothèque's "In a Van". The Walkmen have already played You & Me's raggedly affecting midtempo howler "On the Water" everywhere from Juan's Basement to FOX 5 News, but it's interesting to see how many elements were there even back during CMJ 2007, when this video was made. There's that whistling, for one thing. Acoustic strums and ramshackle percussion back up Hamilton Leithauser's raspy vocal here, as bells ring. Up next: Van Morrison in a van (not really).[original version from You & Me; out now on Gigantic]

Heaven is the elegant, understated, utterly gorgeous new album from the Walkmen, and it may well be their best. I got a promo of the thing a few weeks ago, and it’s been on constant rotation ever since. And now the rest of the world gets to hear it, too. Heaven is streaming in its [...]

The Walkmen: Premature Evaluation: The Heaven
submitted by Nick May 18th 2012 09:00 pm (stereogum.com)
If the Walkmen were a basketball player, they’d be Tyson Chandler: Charming, erudite, handsome, and smooth, but not flashy or self-aggrandizing. Like Chandler, they bring a fundamental intensity to just about everything they do. Chandler has his muscular low-post moves, and the Walkmen have drummer Matt Barrick, who never overwhelms th...
